Dietitian is a legally protected title and medically recognized profession. This means no one can legally claim to be a dietitian unless they have completed all of the following:
- Earned at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited university. Beginning January 2024, all dietitians will be required to earn at least a master’s degree
- Completed a supervised practice program
- Passed the national registration exam
- Complete required continuing education in order to maintain registered status
Many dietitians choose to call themselves RDNs or Registered Dietitian Nutritionists. However, anyone can call themselves a “nutritionist” as it’s not a legally protected title. When choosing a weight loss program, be sure to look for a dietitian or the credentials RD or RDN.
